Reduce Your EMF Exposure

What Is EMF?

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are invisible areas of energy produced by electrically charged

objects. Common everyday sources include:

• Cell phones, tablets, and laptops

• Wi-Fi routers and smart home devices

• Bluetooth headphones and speakers

• Smart meters and electrical appliances

• Power lines, household wiring, and solar panel inverters

While research is ongoing, many functional medicine practitioners recommend a precautionary

approach — especially during sleep, when your body is in its primary repair and detoxification

phase. The Inverse Square Law: Distance Is Your Friend. The single most effective strategy for reducing EMF exposure is simply increasing distance.

EMF intensity drops dramatically with distance according to the Inverse Square Law: This means small changes in how you position and use your devices can have a large impact on your total daily exposure.

Key Principle

Doubling your distance from a source reduces EMF intensity to 1/4 of its original level.

Tripling your distance reduces it to 1/9.

A phone 12 inches away exposes you to roughly 1/100th the EMF of a phone held against your

head.

Measuring EMF in Your Home

We recommend measuring EMF levels throughout your home — especially in bedrooms,

home offices, and areas near smart meters or electrical panels. Use the results alongside the

maximum safety thresholds below to identify problem areas and prioritize your efforts.

Recommended EMF Meters

The following meters are well-regarded for home assessment:

• Acousticom 2

• Safe and Sound Pro

• Safe and Sound Classic

• Cornet ED88T Plus

• Electrosmog Indicator ESI-24

• Trifield TF2 Meter

• ENV RD-10

• AlphaLabs UHS2 3-Axis Gaussmeter

• GQ EMF-390 Multi-Field Electromagnetic Radiation 3-in-1 (EMF/ELF/RF) — available on Amazon

Maximum Safety Thresholds (from the EMF Maximum Tolerability Handout)

Use these targets when assessing readings in your home:

Body Voltage Testing: Measuring Your Personal Exposure

Body voltage testing measures how much AC electric field energy your body is absorbing at

any given location. Unlike measuring the field in the air, this test tells you what your body

itself is actually experiencing — making it one of the most clinically meaningful EMF

measurements you can take.

Type of EMF Exposure Maximum Safety Threshold

AC Electric Fields: Field strength with ground potential. 5 volts per meter

Field strength, potential-free 1.5 volts per meter

Body voltage. 100 millivolts

AC Magnetic Fields 1 milligauss or 100 nanotesla

RF Radiation 10 microwatts per square meter

Dirty Electricity Threshold varies depending on meter used; check

your meter's manual for guidelines

A body voltage meter is available at lessemf.com (search "body voltage meter"). The test is

simple: you hold one probe and place the other on a grounding reference, and the meter

reads the voltage your body is accumulating.

Keep Devices Off Your Body

Direct contact or close proximity dramatically increases your exposure.

Practical steps:

How to Test Body Voltage in Your Home

• Test in every room you spend significant time in — especially your bedroom, home office,

and living room.

• Test while sitting or lying in your usual position (e.g., lying in bed where you sleep).

• Note the reading for each location and compare to the goal threshold.

• If a room shows high body voltage, try unplugging nearby lamps, electronics, or moving the

bed away from walls with wiring.

• Test again after each change to see what made the biggest difference.

• Pay special attention to the area where your head rests while sleeping — this is your highest-

priority zone.

Body Voltage Goal

Optimal target: 50 millivolts (mV) or less.

The maximum safety threshold is 100 mV; aiming for 50 mV or below provides an additional

margin for general health.

Many people find that simply unplugging a bedside lamp or moving the bed can substantially lower

their body voltage reading.

Phones & Tablets

• Use speakerphone or wired (non-Bluetooth) earbuds instead of holding the phone to your

ear.

• Carry your phone in a bag or purse rather than a pants or shirt pocket.

• Do not place a phone or tablet in your lap — use a desk or table.

• Text instead of calling when possible — the phone is held away from your body.

• When a phone is actively transmitting (calls, downloading), keep it at arm's length.

Prioritizing Low-EMF Sleep

Sleep is your body's most critical repair window. Minimizing EMF exposure during the 7–9

hours you spend in bed can be one of the highest-impact changes you make. Aim to make

your bedroom a low-EMF sanctuary.

Nightly Bedroom Checklist

• Put your cell phone in Airplane Mode at night — or better yet, charge it in another room

entirely.

• If you use your phone as an alarm, switch to a battery-powered alarm clock so the phone can

stay out of the bedroom.

• Put your Wi-Fi router on a plug-in outlet timer so it shuts off automatically at bedtime and turns

back on in the morning.

• Disable Bluetooth on all devices in the room when not in use.

• Avoid electric blankets or heated mattress pads while sleeping.

• Move smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home, etc.) out of the bedroom.

• Keep the bed away from exterior walls where smart meters may be mounted.

Dirty Electricity & Solar Panel Inverters

Dirty electricity refers to high-frequency voltage spikes and surges that travel along

standard electrical wiring. Solar panel systems can be a significant source because their

inverters convert DC power to AC and introduce electrical noise onto your home's wiring.

Choosing a Lower-Dirty-Electricity Inverter

Laptops & Computers

• Use a laptop on a desk, not on your lap.

• Connect to the internet with a wired Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi when possible.

• Use a full-sized external keyboard and mouse to keep the laptop further from your body.

• Avoid working with the laptop plugged in and resting directly on skin.

Why Sleep Matters Most

During deep sleep, your brain's glymphatic system clears cellular waste.

Melatonin — a key antioxidant produced at night — may be sensitive to electromagnetic fields.

Minimizing stimulation from wireless signals supports deeper, more restorative sleep.

Integrative & Functional Medicine

Among solar inverters currently on the market, the SMA Sunny Boy is designed to keep dirty

electricity production to a minimum. Even so, some dirty electricity will be generated, and

additional filtration is recommended.

Measuring your dirty electricity levels before and after filter installation (using a compatible

meter such as the Greenwave or Stetzerizer meter, per your meter's manual) is the best way

to confirm effectiveness.

Quick Wins: Where to Start Today

A Note on the Evidence

EMF research is an active and evolving field. Regulatory bodies set exposure limits based

on thermal effects, while some researchers and clinicians advocate for precautionary limits

Installing a Capacitor Filter (Sager Electronics)

• A capacitor/filter can significantly reduce dirty electricity from your solar inverter.

• The filter is available through Sager Electronics (sager.com) — note that Sager is a

business-to-business distributor, which makes the ordering process consumer-unfriendly and

requires patience.

• For a standard 5 kW inverter (the most common size), order part number: 50FC10.

• If your inverter is a different size, contact Sager's technical staff, give them part number

50FC10 as a reference, and ask for the equivalent part for your wattage.

• Have a licensed electrician install the filter in your inverter(s).

• Cost: under $150 for the capacitor/filter.

Action Why It Helps

regarding non-thermal biological effects. This handout reflects a precautionary approach

consistent with functional medicine principles: when a low-cost action may reduce potential

risk, it is reasonable to take it.

If you have specific concerns — including sensitivity symptoms such as headaches, sleep

disruption, or fatigue near wireless devices — discuss them with your AIIM provider.
